Amotekun: Why Army Commander withdraws military checkpoints in Ondo
*** Allegedly shuns security meetings
The relative peace in Ondo State appears threatened as the Nigerian Army over the weekend, withdrew its personnel from various checkpoints mounted on major border areas and hot spots across the state.
A reliable source confided in our correspondent that the Brigade Commander of 32 Artillery Brigade, Brigadier-General Yakubu Yerima who has been having a cold war with the Corps Commandant of Amotekun, Chief Adetunji Adeleye for sometime now, ordered that all military checkpoints be dismantled just as he directed the affected soldiers to return to the barracks.
According to findings, the withdrawal of the soldiers from the checkpoints was the climax of the cold war between Adeleye and General Yerima even as the intervention of Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu had been rebuffed by the Army Commander.
General Yerima has reportedly stayed away from State Security Council meetings in the last six months as confirmed by another source who confided in our correspondent.
According to the source, since he took over as Brigade Commander, Gen. Yerima has protested the operations of Amotekun on the ground that the outfits operations were targeted were against “his people”.
“How do you expect army cooperation with Amotekun when the targets of the operations of the outfit are all his people?.
“We are not against Amotekun as long as they are fighting crime and criminality but why are they always arresting only people of an ethnic group and expect the man to be happy here?
“So we are leaving for Amotekun; let them take the roads and protect the people because the government does not want us to work and even help to fight crime”, he said.
Although no official confirmation has been received in this regard, it was observed that the checkpoints along Ago Ajayi, Owo Ikare Junction, Owen, Ajue, Igbara Oke and Uso Owo have all been dismantled.
The army has not also given reason why military checkpoints were dismantled as of the time of filing the report.
