NWFL: Sunshine Queens beats Nassarawa Amazons, qualifies for super six
Sunshine Queens Football Club of Akure on Wednesday defeated Nassarawa Amazons 3-0 in the match day 13 of the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Premiership.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the win qualifies Sunshine Queens for super six which commences on April 18 and end on April 25.
NWFL body and clubs had agreed through a virtual meeting on Monday to end the season through playoffs to allow the calendar season to be in line with West Africa Football Union(WAFU) qualifier for CAF Womens Champions league in May
The match played at the Ondo State Sports Complex, Akure had Yakubu Aminat heading home Abideen Suliat’s corner in the sixth minute to make it 1-0 into the half.
After several efforts by Sunshine Queens to double its lead, penalty was awarded to the home team after Sikiru Isah’s foul on Sunday Abigail with Ogbonna Akudo stepping up to bury the resultant penalty in the 61st minute.
In the 67th minute, Sunday Abigail benefitted from an error by Nassarawa Amazon’s defender,Ibrahim Mariam which allows Sunday Abigail to net the third for the home side to make it 3-0.
Sunshine Queens Head Coach, Wemimo Mathew said he was happy with the performance of his girls despite playing fewer home matches than the teams above hers.
Mathew said he was happy with the performance of the girls especially by picking maximum three points to place the team in qualifying position by hoping Confluence Queens lost to Dream Stars in Lagos.
She noted that her girls created more chances in the game more than any other game which showed high level of determination of the girls to qualify for super six on a short notice.
The Technical Adviser of Nassarawa Amazons, Musa Danjuma said his team came with another plan, but like two blunders cost his girls the game.
Danjuma noted that football was a game of chance, which the home team took, and his team paid dearly for the mistakes.(NAN)
